livier café employee Marwan Amir, alias Iwan, testified as a witness in the murder trial of suspect Jessica Kumala Wongso on Wednesday at the Central Jakarta District Court. Iwan said he had unintentionally thrown away the straw after tasting the leftover Vietnamese iced coffee.

Jessica’s lawyer Otto Hasibuan previously asked prosecutors to deliver the straw that was used by Wayan Mirna Salihin to sip the iced coffee at the café on Jan. 6 that was believed to have caused her death.

Otto said it was not impossible that the cyanide entered the coffee through the straw. “I threw away the straw after I used it to taste the coffee. I didn’t realize that it would be an important piece of evidence,” Iwan said.

Iwan tasted the coffee by transferring a drop from straw onto his palm. After tasting the coffee, his tongue was paralyzed and he felt nauseous.

Iwan, who was afraid that he would swallow the substance directly, spat the coffee out from his mouth and rinsed his mouth out with water. (bbn)
