he city’s commuter train operator KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) has taken delivery of 30 used railcars to be used to increase the seating capacity of its service, an official has said.
KCJ’s assistant communications manager, Adli Hakim Nasution, said it was expected that the used cars, costing Rp 1 billion (US$ 76,413) each including shipping, would start operating in September after undergoing a certification process by the Transportation Ministry.
The purchase was much cheaper than buying new cars produced by state-owned train manufacturer PT INKA, which cost Rp 11 billion each, he went on.
“We have procured 60 used cars from Japan’s rapid-transit operator Tokyo Metro this year, of which we have received 30 today [Friday]. PT KCJ expects the remaining 30 cars to be shipped by the operator in October,“ Adli told journalists during the arrival of the cars at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta on Friday.
Currently, KCJ operates 764 of its 844 cars serving 850,000 passengers daily, on routes covering Jakarta and Depok, Bogor, Bekasi, all in West Java, and Tangerang in Banten. The operator manages 170 kilometers of rail track and 56 railway stations. The city train operator is aiming for 1.2 million passengers per day by 2018. (rez/ebf)
