ewly appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arcandra Tahar has said he will focus on programs that speed up the country's attainment of energy sovereignty.

He said energy sovereignty should be realized immediately to ensure that if an energy crisis occurred, Indonesia was able to fulfill its energy demands and had alternative energy supplies to uphold the sovereignty of the country.

"For the future policy, our energy resources should be utilized for the sake of the people’s prosperity. Energy sovereignty should be built on the supply side, in which we ensure its availability and benefits for all people," Candra said in Jakarta on Friday.

He further said the ministry was set to ensure legal certainties for investors in the energy sector, including oil and gas, power and mineral resources.

"We must ensure legal certainty for both domestic and foreign investors so that their investment can be in line with our regulations and run well. Such a certainty is needed to ensure the welfare of the people as a [successful] investment could provide jobs and contribute to boosting economic growth in the country," he explained. (ebf)
