etizens on microblogging website Twitter have posted hashtags #ArchandraAnakBangsa [sic] and #arcandraanakbangsa to defend Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arcandra Tahar amid the public outcry over his alleged dual citizenship.

"Arcandra anak bangsa" means "Arcandra is a son of the nation".

A Twitter handle purportedly belonging to AM Hendropriyono (@edo751945) made a series of tweets Sunday and posted #ArchandraAnakBangsa, saying Indonesia should be proud of Arcandra, because he was a brilliant person. “About his dual citizenship, what’s wrong with that? It’s not a crime.”

The handle’s bio says: This is the Official Twitter of General (Ret) Prof. Dr. Abdullah Makhmud Hendropriyono. ST., SH., MH. hendropriyono.com

Hendropriyono is the former head of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), and during President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s presidential campaign in 2014, he was appointed to the steering committee of the pair’s campaign team.

Hendropriyono also wrote that Arcandra was an asset, who had left his high-paying job in the US to develop his own country. Among the tweets was a statement saying that Arcandra held a US passport so that he could “move with ease and get access [to the US].” Several tweets explained that Arcandra had chosen to become an Indonesian.

“Please stop barking at our own government. Those who make a fuss about it, are you more brilliant than Archandra [sic]?” AM Hendropriyono tweeted.

Both hashtags have been used in about 600 posts Sunday; mostly they defend Arcandra, saying that the most important thing was that he wanted to develop Indonesia. (evi)
