mudslide and flooding triggered by intense rainfall that soaked Jakarta throughout Friday afternoon and evening led to the evacuation of the Pondok Labu district in South Jakarta. However, no casualties were reported.
"Flooding in Pondok Labu, 1.6 to two meters. Assistance is needed," said Dipta Rizky Satwika in her Twitter account early on Saturday morning.
Danang Susanto, head of the South Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the mudslide occurred around 8 p.m. in Jalan Melati, Pondok Labu. It blocked a river in the district, leading to a flood two meters deep.
“We are now focusing on the evacuation and water extraction […] Five firefighter brigades have been dispatched to help in the evacuation and water pumps have been deployed for water extraction,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
According to tribunnews.com, at least 75 families in Pondok Labu had been relocated because of the mudslide and the flood. “We need more boats for the evacuation, as the water is still high and several families have yet to be rescued,” said a resident named Siti Fauziah.
The heavy rain had left pools of water in several parts of South Jakarta, such as around the National Police’s residential complex in Ragunan, the National Police headquarters, Kebagusan, the Cilandak town square mall and the Pulo, Bangka, and Kemang districts. (ags)
