T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Southeast Sulawesi Governor Nur Alam (NA) a suspect on Tuesday in a bribery case related to several questionable mining licenses.

“We found corruption in several mining licenses in Southeast Sulawesi from 2009 to 2014 and our investigators have found two pieces of evidence. We named NA, the Southeast Sulawesi governor, a suspect,” KPK commissioner Laode M. Syarif said Tuesday in a press conference at KPK office in Jl. HR Rasuna Said in Jakarta.

“He abused his authority in relation to a license for PT AHD, which did illegal mining in Buton regency,” Laode alleged.

The KPK searched several locations on Tuesday, including Nur’s house and office in Kendari, the province’s capital. They also searched the Energy and Mineral Resources Agency office in Kendari and Nur’s houses in Jakarta, in Pluit, North Jakarta, Bambu Apus in East Jakarta and in Patra Kuningan in South Jakarta.

“This is not a red-handed arrest and we have secured court orders for all the searches,” Laode said.

Laode said the KPK would cooperate with the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), which handled an investigation into Nur’s allegedly inflated bank account in 2014 based on a report from the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK). The KPK itself began an investigation into Nur last year, said Laode.

The KPK has yet to confirm the amount of the state loss, but Laode said it was "significant".

Nur is a politician from National Mandate Party (PAN) and has been the province's governor since 2008. (evi)
