T

wo residents of North Grogol in South Jakarta died Monday evening after allegedly consuming bootleg liquor made up of alcohol and energy drink.

NH, 23, and EW, 21, died on their way to the hospital on Monday evening, Criminal Investigation Unit chief of South Jakarta Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Eko Hadi Santoso said on Tuesday.

The incident took place after EW allegedly asked NH to drink alcohol that night. He then went outside to buy alcohol before they gathered at a rented house in North Grogol.

"EW bought two 50 milliliter bottles of alcohol at a drug store. Then, he mixed the alcohol with the energy drink," Eko said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Not long after drinking the concoction, the victims felt their abdomens burning and they also suffered from suffocation and had foam in their mouths.

The House of Representatives had plans to endorse the controversial alcohol prohibition bill this year that might totally ban production, distribution and consumption of alcohol. The public and businesspeople had expressed concerns that the bill, if passed, would raise the sales and consumption of unsafe bootleg alcohol and illegal liquor. (rin)
