ank Indonesia (BI) is set to print banknotes and mint coins with new designs following the issuance of a presidential decree that has approved the use of images of 12 national heroes for them. It is expected the new banknotes and coins will be in circulation this year.
The director of the central bank’s communications department, Arbonas Hutabarat, said the currently circulating banknotes and coins would still be valid as legal tender in Indonesia despite the issuance of new ones.
"As long as they have not been revoked or withdrawn from circulation, they remain valid," Arbonas said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He explained BI would improve safety elements in the new banknotes to make it easier for people to identify their authenticity and to anticipate counterfeiting attempts.
Arbonas said the use of the images of 12 national hero on the new banknotes and coins was intended to introduce them to all Indonesian people and to foster the spirit of heroism and patriotism. (ebf)
