n response to Sandiaga Uno’s call for more transparency of his campaign funds, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok Tjahaja Purnama has warned his potential challenger in the 2017 gubernatorial election that he “shouldn't talk too much”.
Ahok claims he has a long track record of being a leader, including as an East Belitung City Council member, East Belitung regent, House of Representatives member, Jakarta deputy governor and now governor.
"Sandiaga shouldn't talk too much. He has never been an official. Once someone has become an official, their character is tested by the public," he said.
Ahok said he was open about his campaign’s budget. "It's not a problem. We've previously opened our budget to the public and in future we will reveal it," Ahok said at City Hall on Friday.
Previously, Ahok called on all candidates planning to run in the election to reserve the burden of proof. Sandiaga of the Gerindra Party accepted Ahok's idea and he even challenged Ahok to be transparent about his campaign funds especially in relation to his volunteer group, Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok), who were able to collect 1 million ID-backed signatures from Jakartans as a requirement for Ahok’s previous ambition to run as an independent.
Sandiaga said Teman Ahok had been able to establish booths in several shopping malls to gather copies of ID cards as support for Ahok. Therefore, Sandiaga alluded, Ahok needed to be transparent about the volunteer group’s source of funding. (bbn)
