ndonesia’s hotel industry sees sluggish performance during this year’s Idul Fitri holiday compared to past years, that the players attributed to weakening spending power amid the escalating global tensions following the United States-Israeli war on Iran.
Maulana Yusran, the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) secretary-general, said that some regions had recorded “unexpected performance”.
“According to PHRI’s regional reports, there are some regions, such as Yogyakarta, that saw slow, even declining [growth] compared to last year,” said Maulana, as quoted by Kompas.id.
On average, across the archipelago, the number of tourists staying at hotels only peaked during March 22-23, before dropping sharply by 62-65 percent on the following day. Meanwhile, last year, the peak lasted for three to four days, especially in Java.
“The increase [in tourism activity] began during the second and third days following Idul Fitri, but by the fourth day, it started to decline. That trend was observed in Yogyakarta, West Java and Central Java, even the Idul Fitri holiday [activity] in Bali wasn’t optimal,” he said.
Maulana attributed the subdued tourist activity to the prolonged weak spending power, partly due to extreme weather in the country.
However, he said that several regions recorded better performance in hotel occupancy rates this year, namely Pangandaran in West Java, with occupancy reaching a range of 95 percent to 98 percent.
