T

he Regional Representatives Council (DPD) has decided not to replace its former speaker Irman Gusman, who has been named a suspect of bribery in a case related to sugar imports.

“The DPD will not have a new speaker in the near future. As deputy speakers, I and Bu Hemas [Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Hemas] will lead the DPD,” DPD deputy speaker Farouk Muhammad said on Wednesday.

He argued Irman’s legal process was still ongoing, and anything could change in the future.

Irman was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Saturday on suspicions of accepting a bribe of Rp 100 million (US$ 7,600) from CV Semesta Berjaya director Xaveriandy Sutanto.

Xaveriandy allegedly asked Irman to recommend his company to the State Logistics Agency (BULOG) for an increased sugar import quota.

The DPD ethics council dismissed Irman from his position as speaker on Monday.

DPD ethics council chairman AM Fatwa earlier said the case marked a blow to his institution, as it was the first time in history for a DPD member to be arrested over corruption.

He added that the dismissal was in line with DPD regulations. (wnd/bbn)
