ndonesia has called for stronger cooperation between ASEAN and the UN to help align the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) 71st gathering in New York.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said it was important to boost cooperation between the two organizations across four priority areas, namely the political-security field, economics, the socio-cultural realm and secretariat cooperation.

"Closer cooperation between ASEAN and the UN will eliminate gaps in information and development at the regional and global levels," Retno said in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Friday.

She was speaking at a meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and UN general assembly chair Peter Thomson on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Retno said ASEAN could help eradicate poverty, empower micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and develop maritime infrastructure. These things together could contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the UN, she went on to say.

At the meeting, Retno also conveyed Indonesia's readiness to host the ASEAN-UN Regional Dialogue from Nov. 7-9. The dialogue will formulate recommendations on how ASEAN and the UN can work together to tackle issues such as such irregular migration and the threat of terrorism and radicalism. (ebf)
