T

he Indonesian Military (TNI) is ready to impose punishment on any personnel found guilty of taking sides with any candidates who are running in the 2017 regional elections, a top military official has said.

TNI commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had given an order for the military to secure the upcoming elections with full professionalism and neutrality, in order to realize a truly accountable and democratic election system.

"If anyone finds out that there are TNI personnel who are not neutral [during the elections] please report them immediately. Mention their names and we will process the sanctions as it is the order of the President," Gatot said in Jakarta on Friday.

To ensure successful and secure elections, he continued, he had ordered all military officers, from the highest to the lowest rank, to conduct oversight and early detection of any indication of military personnel supporting any candidates.

He went on to say that any military staff who received information from the public about personnel who promoted and took sides in the regional elections, scheduled for Feb. 15, 2017, in 101 provinces, should immediately follow up on the reports. (ags)
