akarta Legal Aid (LBH Jakarta) lawyer Alldo Fellix Januardy has accused President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo of forgetting his promise during his gubernatorial campaign in 2012 that he would grant land certificates to residents who had occupied their land for more than 20 years.

“Now, Jokowi has become the president whose authority is above the National Land Agency [BPN]. However, no land certificates have been issued as promised. According to the Civil Code, if someone has occupied the land for 20 to 30 years, the administration should grant them land certificates,” Alldo said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Since the Agrarian Law was issued in 1960, many people have tried to register for land certificates. However, many residents faced difficulties in applying for the certificates because of multiple illegal levies, according to Alldo.

Therefore, the residents have never had land certificates for but only hold girik (tax documents) instead and because of the weak basis of land ownership, the evictions in Jakarta had become rampant, Aldo said. (bbn)
