ormer supporters of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo grouped under Seknas Jokowi have thrown their support behind Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who seek reelection on Feb. 15, 2017.

“Jakarta should be led by a firm and honest figure, consistent with the Nawacita [nine goals] of the Jokowi government,” said Seknas Jokowi chairman M. Yamin in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by tempo.com.

Members of Seknas Jokowi, which supported Jokowi in the presidential election in 2014, want to regroup to support the incumbent, he added

Yamin said the decision was based on the result of a meeting between representatives of Seknas Jokowi’s central board and Jakarta chapter.

He hoped the three pairs of gubernatorial candidates would abstain from making negative comments on race or religion in their election campaigns, as doing so would go against the country’s slogan of Unity in Diversity.

Three pairs will take part in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. Aside from Ahok-Djarot, the two other pairs are Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) will officially announce the three pairs as the gubernatorial candidates on Oct. 24. Election organizers are currently checking documents related to their candidacies. (bbn)
