he Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has pledged to closely monitor feedlotters participating in the “5 plus 1” cattle import program, in support of the nation’s livestock sufficiency measures.

Under the program, feedlotters are permitted to import cattle for breeding with an obligation to import one female cow for every five calves.

"This program will help Indonesia become self-sufficient in beef. The President targets nine to 10 years [to achieve the goal] but I think the target can be reached faster. We will supervise their activities and report those who cheat," KPPU chairman Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf said after a meeting at the Trade Ministry in Jakarta on Monday.

Twenty five feedlotters have applied for the program, three of which have been approved, namely Japfa Comfeed subsidiary Santosa Agrindo (Santori) and Gunung Sewu Group's Great Giant Livestock (GGL).

"If they are proven to violate the rule, we will confiscate their cows. It has been stipulated in the agreement and legally sealed," said Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, adding that an audit into their operations will be launched in 2018 at the latest. (ags)
