tate-run energy giant Pertamina is appraising the duo of Ignasius Jonan and Arcandra Tahar as new energy and natural resources minister and deputy minister, expecting them to solve the problems concerning oil and gas, especially those involving investment and efficiency.
Pertamina president director Dwi Soetjipto said two of the crucial jobs the two figures must undertake was to address the prolonged decline of oil production since 2001 and to revise the oil and gas law.
"Next is to solve the gas price problem, as often expressed by President [Joko "Jokowi" Widodo]: How to price gas so industry may attract more investments," he said after the inauguration ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday.
Dwi, who was previously rumored to have been a candidate for the ministerial post, said Jonan's experience in various sectors and his assertiveness and Arcandra's technical experience in the energy sector would promote good teamwork.
Jonan’s experience and knowledge of the financial aspects, he continued, would be valuable in evaluating the existing cost recovery and boost efficiency in the oil and gas sector.
Newly appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan said he was informed he would serve as the minister just two hours before the inauguration when he was given orders to reform the energy sector.
Jonan previously served as transportation minister before being removed from the post in the second reshuffle in July, just a few weeks after a public outcry over a 20-kilometer traffic gridlock at the Brebes toll road exit gate. (ags)
