akarta gubernatorial hopeful Anies Baswedan and his running mate Sandiaga Uno have vowed to recruit more city cleaners to maintain the capital's cleanliness if they emerge as winners in the 2017 polls.

Sandiaga said he and Anies had agreed to recruit more Infrastructure and Public Facility Maintenance Agency (PPSU) officers.

"We will recruit more PPSU in the city. Currently, there are 70 officers [in each district]. We will adjust the PPSU number as well as their income," Sandiaga said during a visit to Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.

The pair also vowed to develop entrepreneurs who would manage the city's garbage.

"Within three to five years, we will not only recruit more PPSU personnel but also increase the number of entrepreneurs who will manage the city's trash. We believe that PPSU can become initiators of the waste management community," he said.

Waste, one of the capital's ongoing woes, could become a blessing for residents if they could manage it properly, the businessman further said.

Currently, under Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama's administration, there are 40 to 70 PPSU officers in every district in the capital. Each month, they receive a Rp 3.1 million (US$238) salary in accordance with the provincial minimum wage (UMP).
