T

he Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has praised Indonesia's commitment to supporting the peace process and independence of Palestine during the 43rd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

"[OIC secretary general] Iyad Madani has emphasized that the implementation of the 5th OIC Extraordinary Summit on Palestine Al Quds Al Sharif in Jakarta, in March 2016, was a breakthrough that had recalled the importance of the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East as a whole," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, in a response to comments made by the OIC leader.

Madani conveyed appreciation to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration for its support of the world’s efforts to achieve peace in Palestine. His praise was echoed by the foreign ministers of Palestine and Kuwait.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi is currently attending the annual meeting, along with 23 other foreign ministers, where the theme this year takes focus of education.

Uzbekistan's interim President Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted the importance of the theme, pointing out its relevance in addressing the challenges faced by the Muslim world today, with education as an entry point to support the peace process by bolstering innovation and creativity.

Madani stressed the importance for OIC to take a role in developing cooperation initiatives among member countries in the field of education, as well as ensuring peaceful conditions to avoid a repeat of various conflicts. (ebf)
