ustralian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has said stronger collaboration with creative industries in Indonesia, especially in the world of fashion, was important for the economies of both countries.

Bishop had brought with her the Australian Fashion Chamber general manager, Courtney Miller, in an inaugural visit to the Jakarta Fashion Week on Wednesday. Miller is tasked with forging deeper collaboration across creative industries, especially in fashion, the minister said.

"Australia and Indonesia are neighbors, we collaborate across a broad range of areas, but I think one of the most exciting, dynamic and innovative notions is our teamwork in the world of fashion," Bishop told reporters during a visit to several fashion stalls at the "Fashion Link" venue in Jakarta.

In Australia, the creative industry contributes A$ 90 billion, while the fashion industry's share amounts to $12 billion, she said. It also provides about 220,000 jobs, Bishop said. In Indonesia, the fashion world contributes $15 billion to the economy, while employing four million people, she added.

Jakarta Fashion Week has showcased Australian designers for the past three years, Bishop noted, adding that she looked forward to seeing more Indonesian designers featured in Australia fashion weeks in the future.

Triawan Munaf, head of the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf), who accompanied Bishop to speak with several Indonesian designers, expressed enthusiasm that collaboration in the fashion industry between the two countries would only grow stronger moving forward. (dmr)
