ang Nadim International Airport in Batam has applied a new airport tax of Rp 60,000 (US$4.59), up by 50 percent from Rp 40,000, for domestic flight passengers starting from Oct.27.
“The new airport tax has taken effect as of Thursday,” the airport’s general manager Suwarso said as quoted by Antara.
He said Hang Nadim imposed the airport tax increase following the issuance of Finance Ministerial Regulation No.148/2016 on service taxes for general service agencies at Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) on Sept.30 and a BP Batam head regulation on Oct.18.
Based on the regulations, the airport tax for domestic flights is set at Rp 60,000 per passenger while for international flights the new tax will be Rp 200,000, up from Rp 180,000.
In June, then Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan rejected the airport tax hike proposal, saying the proposed tax increases were inappropriate considering the condition of facilities, such as passenger waiting rooms and restrooms, at Hang Nadim. The minister urged the airport’s management to first improve those facilities.
Suwarso said earlier that the airport’s management had requested the airport tax increases on account of its status as a main airport, similar to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
“He [Jonan] did not approve our tax hike request at that time. He asked us to first improve facilities at the airport,” he told The Jakarta Post. “Together with BP Batam, we carried out some improvements.”
This is the second international route airport tax increase at Hang Nadim this year, having previously increased its airport tax to Rp 180,000 from Rp 170,000 on July 1. (ebf)
