Around 400 female weavers in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and West Sumatra are set to receive financial literacy training.
Provided by Malaysian lender Maybank Group, through its corporate social responsibility program, Maybank Foundation, the “Maybank Women Eco Weaver” aims to empower the economy of local people, especially communities of female weavers.
Maybank Indonesia’s corporate communication and branding division head, Esti Nugraheni, said Maybank Women Eco Weavers was scheduled to be launched in Lombok, NTB, on Nov.2.
“This is a program to conserve traditional hand-woven textiles, as part of ASEAN cultural heritage, which will be conducted by Maybank through women empowerment activities to help them achieving their economic independence and to create financial inclusion among female weavers in countries across ASEAN,” she told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
She further said in Indonesia, the program would be centered in four areas, namely Central and East Lombok regencies in NTB and Sawahlunto and Tanah Datar regencies in West Nusa Tenggara.
“In this program, Maybank will hold training activities periodically for 400 female weavers in those four regencies for three years. Among training materials included hand-weaving techniques, natural dyeing processes, marketing and promotion skills and financial literacy,” said Esti.
Maybank Group chairman Tan Sr Dato' Megat, accompanied by Maybank Indonesia president director and commissioner Umar Juoro, will officially launch the Maybank Women Eco Weavers program in Lombok on Wednesday.
“The NTB governor [M.Zainul Majdi] and Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry officials will attend the launch ceremony,” said Esti. (ebf)
