The bodies of the four crew members on board the crashed DHC-4 Caribou aircraft have been sent from Mimika, Papua, to the Sutanto Police Hospital in Jakarta for identification.

“We received four body bags from the Search and Rescue [SAR] team for an identification process at the Timika Regional General Hospital. Because the Disaster Victim Identification team lacked post-mortem data and a comparison database, we decided to send the bodies to the police hospital in Kramat Jati, Jakarta, today,” Mimika Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Victor D. Mackbon told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

The victims’ bodies and family members were flown to Jakarta via a Trigana airplane.

The four victims are pilot Capt. Farhat Limit, co-pilot Fendi Ardianto, mechanics Steven David Basari and flight operations officer Endri Baringin. A joint SAR team managed to remove their bodies from the mountain, located 2,000 meters above sea level, in Jila district, Mimika, at 6:35 a.m., local time, on Tuesday.

“The SAR team, helped by local residents, moved the bodies from the crash site by carrying them to Jila Airport. It took around two hours for them to reach the airport. A helicopter belonging to Airfast Indonesia was standing by for the evacuation to Timika,” said Victor, adding that a National Transportation Safety Committee investigation was being conducted to uncover the cause of the incident.

The cargo aircraft belonging to the Puncak administration was reported to have lost contact at 7:57 a.m., local time, on Monday, on its way from the Moses Kilangin Timika Airport in Mimika, Papua, to Ilaga Airport in Puncak regency. (ebf)
