ommuter trains serving the Greater Jakarta area will continue to operate at all stations on Friday with thousands of people set to take part in a mass rally in the capital city that day against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, the area's train management confirmed.
“On Friday, the commuter line will operate as usual and will stop at all stations,” said PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek spokeswoman Eva Chairunisa in a statement on Thursday.
Eva said more police officers would be deployed to secure train stations located close to the areas of demonstration like at the Juanda, Sudirman and Gondangdia stations in Central Jakarta.
“For example, at Juanda Station, the number of police officers will increase to 34 personnel from [the standard] 14 personnel,” she said.
Organizers have estimated that around 200,000 people will take part in the demonstration that aims to push the police to seriously investigate the defamation case against the Jakarta governor. Ahok had apologized for his statement in Thousand Islands, and stressed that he had no intention to insult the Quran.
Ahok had been reported to the National Police by a number of organizations and the police have questioned a number of witnesses. The police plan to summon Ahok next Monday. (bbn)
