ice President Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday shared his personal opinions about the ongoing US election, saying he wanted to see Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton win over the Republican Party’s Donald Trump due to the latter’s protectionist stance.

"If Trump is elected [in the election], it may be harder for us, because he is a protectionist," Kalla said on the sidelines of the ASEAN G2B Infrastructure Investment Forum in Jakarta on Tuesday.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to withdraw the US from global trade alliances, including by quitting the North American Free Trade Agreement if it is not renegotiated and killing the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

Kalla, however, underlined that regardless of the election result, he hoped the new US president would bring peace to the world, which would support the global economy to grow again.

"We certainly hope for peace, but if Trump wins, it would likely be difficult," he said.

Kalla has previously expressed that he is not a fan of Trump. In June, he criticized Trump following the latter’s plan to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US, saying it could spark retaliatory policies from other countries.
