T

he number of international students at US colleges and universities has surpassed 1 million for the first time during the 2015-2016 academic year, a newly released report reveals.

The 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange states the number shows a 7 percent increase to 1,044,000 international students from the previous year.

The new report also reveals that 8,727 of this total are students from Indonesia. This is the highest amount in 12 years, placing Indonesia 19th in place of origin among international students in the US.

“Our combined efforts have resulted in a nearly 26 percent increase in the number of Indonesians studying in the US since 2010,” the report said.

Open Doors also reports that more than 313,000 US students received credit last year for studying abroad, increasing by nearly 3 percent over the previous year.  The number of US students coming to Indonesia to study for academic credit has increased by 5.1 percent to 534.

In 2015-16, 66.7 percent, or more than half of the Indonesian students in the US, studied at undergraduate level, 18.6 percent pursued graduate studies, 11.3 percent pursued optional practical training, and 3.4 percent enrolled in non-degree programs such as English language or short-term studies.

The release of the new Open Doors report coincides with International Education Week (IEW), an initiative through which the US Embassy promotes the benefits of international education. IEW 2016 will be celebrated with a string of activities, such as educational events at @america, outreach to high school and university students and information sessions on graduate scholarships, among others.
