he Attorney General's Office (AGO) is now officially handling the blasphemy case involving Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama after police gave it the case evidence on Thursday morning. 

AGO spokesman M. Rum said that it would submit the case to the North Jakarta District Court as soon as possible. 

"We will deliver take this case to court soon. It could be today, tomorrow, or next week. It will be soon," Rum said at the AGO headquarters in South Jakarta on Thursday.

Ahok arrived at the AGO headquarters at 9.58 a.m. after having previously gone to the National Police office. 

He underwent a verification and validation process for about an hour and gave statements in a press conference afterwards. 

"Thank you for your coverage. The examination process has been finished. I hope you can pray for me so the legal process can proceed fairly and transparently," Ahok told journalists. 

"I hope that this case can be settled soon so I can use my time to serve Jakartans better."

The AGO declared Ahok's 826-page case dossier complete on Friday morning.

Police named Ahok a blasphemy suspect on Nov. 16 over a comment he made about how some people were misusing a verse from the Quran. He made the comment, which was videotaped, edited and then posted online, during a visit to the Thousand Islands regency in late September. 

Ahok was charged with violating articles 156 and 156, section a, of the Criminal Code (KUHP) concerning blasphemy, which carries maximum sentence of five years in prison upon conviction. (jun)
