he National Police have confirmed the arrest of 10 people before the large mass gathering at National Monument (Monas) park, Central Jakarta, called to demand the incarceration of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama for blasphemy.

They have been named as Ahmad Dhani, Eko, Adityawarman, Kivlan Zein, Firza Huzein, Ratna Sarumpaet, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, Sri Bintang Pamungkas, Jamran and Rizal.

"We have arrested 10 people for allegedly violating the criminal law. The arrests were our follow-up on certain reports," National Police Spokesman Martinus Sitompul said at Monas on Friday afternoon.

He added that some of the people were arrested for allegedly planning to attack the legitimate government and the others for allegedly defaming national leaders.

The police had decided to interrogate them at the Police Mobile Brigade headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, because they had not responded to police summonses for questioning, Martinus said

He said that according to the Criminal Law Procedures Code the police had the right to hold them for up to 24 hours for questioning regarding the alleged crimes. (dmr)
