upporters of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama are set to stage a demonstration in front of the North Jakarta District Court building on Tuesday, where prosecutors will read out their response to the non-active governor's exception, which Ahok conveyed in the first hearing of his blasphemy trial on Dec. 13.
The demonstration's coordinator Yayong Waryono claimed around 1,000 to 2,000 people from several groups supporting Ahok would join the rally at the court, which was now temporarily located at the former Central Jakarta District Court building on Jl. Gajah Mada No.17, Central Jakarta.
“The demonstration aims to remind the judges that the law should not bow to public pressure. We want them to enforce the law based on the facts," Yayong told The Jakarta Post on Monday. The rally was set to start at 7 a.m., he went on.
Yayong further explained that the demonstrators would all wear white clothes. They would convey their aspirations and pray together during the rally, he added.
Yayong said he hoped that no clash would erupt during the demonstration because on the same day supporters of several Muslim organizations reportedly also planned to hold a rally to demand the arrest of Ahok.
“They have their own aspirations while we have our’s. We hope all demonstrators can respect each other tomorrow," he said. (ebf)
