uni Yani, the suspected uploader of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s alleged blasphemous video, is optimistic the South Jakarta District Court would rule in his favor during his pretrial motion hearing on Wednesday.

Buni’s lawyer Aldwin Rahardian said arguments, including testimonies of witnesses and experts from both sides, that had been presented in hearings so far had been in favor his client, showing that his suspect naming was invalid.

“Especially after we are supported by people with prayers, we are optimistic [to win the case],” Aldwin told reporters at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Tuesday.

On Dec.5, Buni filed a pretrial hearing request with the South Jakarta District Court to challenge the Jakarta Police’s decision to name him a suspect in a religious and ethnic hatred case.

“Hopefully, the judge panel can act objectively and fairly,” Aldwin said.

Buni was named suspect last month for posting on his Facebook account an edited version of a video that showed Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama mentioning a Quranic verse. Ahok's remarks in the video were later considered a blasphemy and triggered uproar among some Islamic organizations.

Buni said his suspect naming was as a “criminalization” against him. He said the police did not follow proper procedures before naming him suspect, including not holding a case reconstruction.

Buni said the absence of a case reconstruction in the police’s investigation violated the Criminal Code Procedures (KUHAP) and the National Police chief regulation on investigation procedures.

The police denied Buni’s accusation, saying they had followed necessary procedures, including carrying out a case reconstruction. (ebf)
