he Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) is verifying campaign funding reports submitted by three candidate pairs for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, namely Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno, an election official has said.

“We are assessing the validity of the reports to see whether or not they were compiled in line with prevailing regulations,” KPU Jakarta head Sumarno told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

He further said the KPU Jakarta would check whether the candidates’ campaign funding documents were thorough, by including, for example,  the identity of donors and the amount of their donations.

By law, the maximum amount allowed for individual contributions for a gubernatorial candidate is Rp 75 million (US$ 5,575.80) from individuals and Rp 750 million from private companies. All donors should also submit their complete data, including a copy of their identity cards and taxpayer number cards.

Sumarno said that on Feb. 12, or a day after the campaign period finished, all candidates should submit reports of campaign funds obtained and expenses, after which the reports would be audited by public accountants.

By Tuesday, Ahok and Djarot had reportedly booked Rp 48 billion in campaign funds from donations, in which they had spent Rp 5.9 billion to cover their campaign activities and daily operational costs.

Agus and Sylvi collected Rp 9.15 billion while Anies and Sandiaga had Rp 35.6 billion. Most of Anies and Sandiaga's campaign funds reportedly came from the latter's pocket. (ebf)
