he North Sumatra Police are striving to suppress any possible terrorist threat that may disrupt Christmas and New Year celebrations in the province by applying a maximum level of security precautions.
North Sumatra Police chief Rycko Amelza Dahniel said the maximum security level had been applied alongside the current security conditions in areas across Indonesia.
He said the police would focus their security measures on vital objects, especially houses of worship such as churches, mosques, Buddhist monasteries and Chinese temples. They will also heighten security at shopping centers, tourist destinations, residential compounds of certain ethnic groups and police offices.
“We want to apply a maximum level of security at all vital objects. We also need to pay attention to personnel assigned to provide security,” Rycko told journalists after a call of readiness ceremony for an end-of-year security operation codenamed Operation Lilin Toba 2016 at Merdeka Square in Medan on Thursday.
To implement these maximum security measures, the North Sumatra Police have deployed 7,500 security officers, supported by a joint team comprising 2,500 personnel from the Indonesian Military, the Public Order Agency, the Transportation Ministry and public security and order (Kamtibmas) officers.
“I hope all societal elements can support these security measures by taking an active role in giving information to officers if they find suspicious situations,” said Rycko.
Meanwhile, suspected terrorist Syafii, 27, arrested during a joint operation conducted by the National Police’s Densus 88 counterterrorism squad and the North Sumatra Police in Deli Serdang on Wednesday, has been taken to Jakarta for further interrogation. (ebf)
