ational Monument square in Jakarta, which is a tourist destination, was closed during the Christmas holiday, disappointing those visiting the city.
“I’m very disappointed with this situation. It’s a holiday season but it’s closed. I came a long way and my children have never seen Monas,” Toto, 45, who came from Pemalang, Central Java, said on Monday.
At the entrance to Monas a sign revealed that the area was closed on Monday for maintenance and would be reopened on Tuesday.
Jakarta civil servants, like other civil servants, took collective leave as ordered by the central government.
“I cannot go here tomorrow because we’re going home this afternoon,” he said as quoted by Warta Kota.
Another visitor, Andi, 40, was also disappointed when he and his little daughter could not enter the square.
“A pity we cannot go in. Let’s go here again tomorrow,” he told his daughter.
He said that although he only lived in Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta, not so far away from Monas, he was still disappointed that the public space closed.
“We’re disappointed because we have relatives from Tasikmalaya [West Java] who visited Jakarta to see Monas but they could not see it,” he said. (evi)
