akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has expressed optimism that his deputy, Djarot Saiful Hidayat, will be a capable governor because he is an honest leader who has the experience of being a mayor for 10 years.

Ahok made the statement after his refutation was rejected by judges at the North Jakarta District Court on Tuesday. By law, Ahok must be suspended as governor because of his status as a defendant in a defamation case. The Jakarta gubernatorial election will be held on Feb. 15, 2017, but Ahok’s term would have otherwise run until October 2017.

Djarot as a deputy governor will constitutionally take Ahok’s position. Ahok and Djarot are currently on leave to campaign for the election.

“Djarot was the mayor [of Blitar in East Java] for 10 years. He is honest,” Ahok told supporters at his Rumah Lembang campaign center in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday as reported by tribunnews.com.

Ahok said that he, Djarot and other regional leaders from across the country once traveled to China on a working trip and that most of the leaders took a lot of money and went shopping. “Djarot and I went to bed after dinner because we had no money,” Ahok recalled.

“There many smart people, but it is difficult to find honest ones. How can we test them? We will know their characters after they are entrusted as leaders,” Ahok added. (bbn)
