ali Police chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto has reassured Bali residents and tourists that they can celebrate New Year’s Eve peacefully. He stressed that no indications of a terrorist threat to the resort island had been detected.

"Based on intelligence reports, there is no serious threat involving terrorism in Bali," said Sugeng in Denpasar on Thursday.

He said the police were doing their best to ensure the safety of residents and tourists during New Year’s Eve celebrations, but added that no country could guarantee an absence of security disturbances, including acts of terror.

"However, we are doing our best to ensure safety for people," he said.

At least 3,726 police personnel will be deployed across Bali to safeguard New Year’s Eve celebrations, he added.

"We will increase security measures at all gateways into Bali -- seaports and the airport – and at vital installations and other places visited by crowds, such as nightclubs and shopping centers.  (bbn)
