A

pp-based motorcycle taxi service GrabBike's drivers staged a rally on Thursday, protesting that the company had implemented a meter-based tariff.

Kompas.com reported that hundreds of the drivers had gathered in Senayan, South Jakarta, as they planned to stage their rally in front of the Grab Indonesia office in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

Several police personnel were seen guarding the rally near the Bung Karno stadium. No traffic congestion was reported. Some Internet users complained about the lack of Grab drivers available.

“We have notified the police that 1,000 people will join the rally,” Jobing, one of the drivers grouped in the United GrabBike Joint Forum, said, adding that the drivers were from greater Jakarta.

Without giving details as to their demands, Jobing said the drivers demanded the company increase the current tariff, which was considered too low.

In addition to GrabBike, GoJek and Uber bike are currently operating in Jakarta, increasing competition and supposedly decreasing the tariff. (jun)
