he National Police have announced that they will step up law enforcement efforts against violations of the 2008 Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law in regard to rampant fake information circulating on the internet.
National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said more than 2,700 reports on alleged violations of the ITE law had been lodged last year, 40 percent of which had been settled.
“We will continue the search for websites, blogs and other social media accounts that distribute fake information. We will develop our cybercrime units to respond to the high number of reports filed by individuals,” Martinus said.

In dealing with reports of alleged violations of the ITE Law, Martinus said the police were prioritizing reports that involved the victimization of a large number of people and of public figures and state officials.
A lack of analysts had forced the police to prioritize even though it should respond to all reports equally, he added.
