C

oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto said on Monday that the soon-to-be-established National Cyber Agency will oversee cybersecurity in the country, not just tackle hoaxes.

Wiranto said the new agency would be tasked with protecting the country from cyberattacks, without violating privacy or watching corporate activities on the internet like many people are worried it will.

When the agency is established, it will be assigned with overseeing at least three main tasks, namely protecting e-commerce, banking and all online financial transactions from attacks.

“So far, there has not been any agency tasked with protecting the three institutions,” Wiranto said as quoted by kontan.co.id.

The National Cyber Agency, which is set to be established this month, will coordinate existing cyberbodies in government institutions and departments such as the Defense Ministry, the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) and the National Police.

Heru Sutadi, executive director of the Indonesian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Institute, told The Jakarta Post on Monday that the country needed an agency which was directly overseen by the President, such as the National Cyber Agency, to protect the country from cyberattacks, especially from overseas.
