T

hree Indonesian mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes won the home crowd's heart by winning two out of three matches at the MMA One Championship held at the Jakarta Convention Center on Saturday.

Indonesian standout Sunoto aka “The Terminator”, who competed in the third match, stood at the edge of the ring after he beat opponent Cambodian grappler Chan Heng in the first round. Sunoto gained significant points by landing punches to his opponent's face repeatedly, forcing the referee to separate them.

The only Indonesian fighter to lose was Adrian Matheis of Papua. Matheis gave up after not being able to disentangle himself from the arms of his contender, Rene Catalan of the Philippines.

In the championship, the prime match was between Vitaly Bigdash of Russia versus Aung Là N. Sang of Myanmar in the middleweight category. Bigdash obtained his first title defense and stayed undefeated after he topped Sang in a unanimous decision.

Other fighters participating in the championship were Anthony Engelen and Vincent Latoel, both from The Netherlands, but have Indonesian ancestry. (ebf)
