he Bali Police told tourists to take precautions to prevent rape, saying perpetrators were given “the opportunity” in three rape cases involving tourists from China and Australia.
Two Chinese women and an Australian woman were raped when they were holidaying in Bali in three consecutive days.
“In these cases, based on the incidents and the available evidence, the perpetrators were given the opportunity to commit the crime,” the Bali Police’s General Crimes Investigation (Reskrimum) director Sr. Comr. I Gede Adhi Mulyawarman told the press conference on Friday.
“Based on crime theory, for a crime to happen there must be intention and opportunity. In reality, there might not be any intention, but if there is an opportunity, there will be an intention,” he said.
“For example, in some of the cases, most of the victims were going out at night alone until early morning, dressed appropriately for nightlife, and with no one around.”
However, Adhi denied that he blamed the victims for the sexual violence.
“We don’t blame anyone. Victims are still victims. We should prioritize them,” he said.
