T

he Judicial Commission has appointed its deputy chairwoman Sukma Violetta to join the Constitutional Court’s (MK) honorary council, a body established to probe possible ethical violations committed by former court justice Patrialis Akbar who has been implicated in a bribery case.

Judicial Commission spokesperson Farid Wajdi said the decision was taken following a plenary meeting of commission executives on Tuesday.

“We hope that the establishment of the council can become an evaluation and warning to Constitutional Court justices to avoid committing violations of ethics and guidelines,” Farid told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

The Constitutional Court established the council last Friday following the arrest of Patrialis by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in connection with alleged bribery relating to a judicial review of Law no. 41/2014 on cattle and animal health being heard by the court.

The investigation of the council will run independently, without considering the legal process of the KPK case. If Patrialis is found to have committed a serious violation, the council will send a recommendation to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to dismiss him as a judge.

With Sukma’s appointment, membership of the council is now complete, as it previously comprised court justice Anwar Usman, former court justice Achmad Sodiki, legal expert Bagir Manan and former State Intelligence Agency (BIN) deputy chief As’ad Said Ali.(jun)
