he Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni campaign team remains optimistic that it has enough time to secure the votes necessary to advance to the second round of voting in the Jakarta gubernatorial election, despite polls putting Agus in bottom position and under threat of early elimination.
Roy Suryo, a member of the Agus-Sylviana team, said Friday that recent survey results had served as a “wake-up call”, and the team was going through a process of serious reevaluation.
“But this doesn’t mean that we will concede defeat. There are still five days before voting day and in politics, anything can happen,” Roy told reporters.
A recent survey of 621 respondents suggests that Agus-Sylviana will be eliminated in the first round as the ticket was revealed to be the least popular of the three tickets competing in the election.
The survey, held by Indikator Politik Indonesia, found that just 19.45 percent respondents said they would vote for Agus-Sylviana.
The survey suggests that Agus' "disappointing" performance during the second debate on Jan. 27 was the reason behind the drop in his popularity.
Incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Anies Baswedan received approval ratings of 39.04 percent and 35.36 percent, respectively.
Another survey released by SMRC on Friday found Ahok and Anies in first and second place, with large margins separating them from Agus. (bbs)
