eople’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Zulkifli Hasan has called on all stakeholders to ensure that the regional elections, scheduled to be held simultaneously across 101 regencies and municipalities on Feb. 15, run smoothly.

Zulkifli, who also chairs the National Mandate Party (PAN), said the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the National Police must play key roles in preventing “problems” that might disrupt the elections.

"I hope the KPU will carry out its duties professionally and remain impartial. I also hope Bawaslu can carry out its duties professionally in the upcoming elections,” Zulkifli said during a discussion at the House of Representatives complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

He later pointed out the National Police should try to anticipate any potential threats to ensure that voters could cast their votes without facing any problems.

Zulkifli's party supports Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono. The other parties supporting Agus are the Democratic Party, the United Development Party (PPP) and the National Awakening Party (PKB).

During the discussion, Zulkifli asserted that the Jakarta gubernatorial election could see a higher possibility of problems and irregularities compared to other regions.

“Jakartans have to work hand-in-hand to ensure peace in the capital after the [gubernatorial] election,” he said. (ebf)
