The Kupang Police in East Nusa Tenggara have arrested three men for allegedly producing and distributing fake banknotes.

“Counterfeit money worth more than Rp 30 million [US$2,250] in Rp 100,000 and Rp 50,000 notes have been distributed by the suspects in Kupang and surrounding areas,” Kupang Police’s Criminal Investigations Department head First. Insp. Simson Amalo told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

The suspects have been identified as Silvester Aubere, 32, Jupiter Fredik Billi, 52 and Anton Langga. The police also seized plain paper and Canon printers as evidence.

The case came to light when a kiosk owner in Oesao village in East Kupang district, Kupang regency, reported Anton for paying a bill using counterfeit notes.

Bank Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara manager, Naek Tigor Sinaga, has warned the public to beware of the distribution of counterfeit banknotes, especially ahead of Idul Fitri.

“We have also been taking measures to anticipate the distribution of fake notes at border areas [with Timor Leste], such as in Atambua,” he said. (bbs)
