T

he Bogor Botanical Gardens in cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) is holding a waste festival, at the Bogor Botanical Gardens, in West Java, on Saturday, to mark National Waste Day.

"The Bogor Botanical Gardens are committed to taking a role in realizing Indonesia's free from waste program by 2020," LIPI's deputy of plant science, Enny Sudarmonowati, said as quoted by Antara.

The event, which has also been running for the last two years, is also part of the Gardens' 200th anniversary celebration and 50th anniversary of LIPI, Enny said.

The festival, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, has invited several communities involved in advocating various waste treatment programs.

Enny expressed hopes that the event would raise awareness about the importance of waste treatment considering that every year visitors to the gardens produced about 10 tons of waste.

The management of the gardens could not recycle that waste because the garden did not have the facilities for recycling, she said.

Meanwhile, festival chairman Joko Ridho Witono said there would be a recycling workshop, waste treatment training in line with the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) principle and exhibitions throughout the event.

Ridho said the festival would encourage residents to minimize the use of plastic and start recycling.

On Sunday, the event will be enlivened by music performances. (cal)
