The owners of the buildings were compensated but failed to clear the plots themselves, said South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi.
“According to the asset statement letter, 14 days after compensation was received, the owners were to take down their properties. However, it’s been two months and the buildings continued to stand. So we demolished them because we have acquired the plots,” Tri said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
At least 29 plots were located in Cilandak district and five others were located in Kebayoran Baru, he said.
The demolition process involved 150 officers from Bina Marga, the South Jakarta Transportation Agency, the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), the Army and the police.
Aside for the MRT project, the cleared plots of land will also permit road expansion projects.
The administration targets to complete the construction of the MRT by 2018, Tri said. (dea/dmr)
