ity Council deputy speaker Triwisaksana said that the body might reject the additional Rp 16 trillion (US$1.2 billion) budget requested by PT MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) to alter the South-North line from Bundaran HI - Kampung Bandan route to Bundaran HI - Ancol Timur.

Triwisaksana said that Ancol Timur in North Jakarta was already served by commuter line operated by PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ), therefore the additional budget to develop MRT would be a waste of money, he said.

"There is already a commuter line serving the Jakarta and Ancol route. Why should we disburse Rp 16 trillion to build an MRT [for that route]," Triwisaksana said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

Furthermore, he added, the government had planned to develop light rail transit (LRT) from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, that would partly overlap the Bundaran HI-Ancol Timur route, so the proposed MRT reroute would only overlap other mass transportation lines, he said.

The planned reroute was also unnecessary because that route was not favored by the city's commuters, Triwisaksana added. (Cal)
