N

ahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) executive board deputy chairman Marsudi Syuhud says former NU chairman and Presidential Advisory Board (Wantimpres) member Hasyim Muzadi was an inspiration to the younger generation.

“In addition to his active endeavor to maintain diversity in Indonesia, he also promoted the NU as international organization, in which he pioneered the establishment of several overseas NU branches,” Marsudi said.

Hasyim passed away on Thursday in his hometown of Malang, East Java. The former chairman of the country's largest Muslim organization died at his residence in the compound of the

Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Hikam Islamic boarding school after being treated at the Lavalette Hospital for five days.

Marsudi said PBNU leaders were currently attending a conference on religious tolerance in Rembang, Central Java, which Hasyim was also scheduled to attend.

Marsudi added that to honor the former NU chairman, he had asked all NU members, including those overseas, to hold shalat ghaib (prayers for the deceased) for Hasyim. (Dis/jun)
