part of the ceiling on the first floor of the Depok Town Square mall in West Java crashed down on Thursday, hitting some kiosks and tenants’ roofs. The cause of the collapse remains unknown.
One visitor, Yongki, said that the collapse of the ceiling occurred suddenly and was followed by thump of wood and stone.
“I heard a loud noise that left us in shock. It was really scary and thank God I was not standing under the collapsed roof,” Yongki said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
He added that a lot of visitors screamed hysterically during the incident.
According to him, the section of ceiling that collapsed was between 30 and 50 square meters in size. The Depok Police were at the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
In September last year, the roof of another mall, the Plaza Kalibata in South Jakarta, suddenly collapsed when heavy rain and winds blew through the region. At that time, the wind lifted the mall roof and dropped it onto the floor. No fatalities were reported but one person was injured. (wnd)
