Regions told to issue regulations on ‘ojek’ Police officers try to protect an 'ojek' (motorcycle taxi) driver, who is being intimidated by protesting angkot (public minivan) drivers on Jl. TMP Taruna in Tangerang, Banten, on March 8. Thousands of angkot drivers staged a rally demanding that the administration ban 'ojek' ride-hailing applications. (Antara/Lucky R)

ransportation Ministry director general for land transportation Pudji Hartanto Iskandar says he has called on regional administrations to issue regulations on ojek (motorcycle taxis) as they are a form of public transportation not yet covered by transportation regulations.

“The authority is with regional administrations because they are not yet regulated by [national] law,” he said on Thursday, adding that regulations could be in the form of a decree issued by heads of regional administrations, be they mayors, regents or governors.

He lauded the Depok administration in West Java for issuing Mayoral Regulation No. 11/2017, which covers both conventional and ride-hailing app ojek, in a bid to prevent tension between drivers of both non-route public transportations.

The regulation includes a prohibition on ojek drivers from picking up passengers at terminals and roads passed by other modes of public transportation.  Drivers are also prohibited from parking their vehicles along pedestrian facilities.

The regulation was issued after a violent clash between ride-hailing app drivers and public transportation drivers in various areas, including Tangerang, Banten. (bbn)
